Okay but the meaning behind this song is really tragic. For those who don’t know Ember’s story or understand the lyrics, allow me to explain:
Ember was a teenage girl in high school who wanted to be a rockstar (but I think she was bullied for her dreams). One day, a popular boy asked her out and Ember waited hours for him to arrive. Realizing he stood her up, she went home heartbroken and cried herself to sleep. However, her house mysteriously caught on fire and that’s how she died, which explains why her hair is made of flames.
I’m not making this up. One of the creators for the show wrote the story so it’s canon. Just thought I’d share the meaning behind Ember’s song in case anyone was curious.
I loved Ember as a character and now I love her more. She perfectly represents her backstiry, like how she used Love as a weapon, since that happened to her, and the only way to free yourself from it is to. Be absolutely heartbroken.
The line “Hey there, Delilah / You be good, and don’t you miss me / Two more years and you’ll be done with school / And I’ll be makin’ history like I do” is an example of the classic erasure of women’s success when compared to men because who’s to say Delilah’s degree won’t come with a groundbreaking piece of research that changes her field forever and mr. plain white tees over is just writing simple chord progressions not discovering new theories of societal advancement. Delilah went out and earned her degree and mr. plain white tees had the AUDACITY to say “someday I’ll pay the bills with this guitar.” Delilah honey dump his ass & go make your money.
Not to read into this post too deep but this is an interview with the real ‘Delilah’ in the song where she talks about how she wasn’t actually even dating mr plain white tees guy when the song came out and for a long time the song was a source of discomfort for her.. She also talks about her accomplishments as an athlete in this interview, she’s a rlly talented long distance runner.

God, she even attended the 2008 Grammy Award show as Mr. Plain White Tee’s guest, which probably further cemented the public’s belief that they were a thing.
Like, she didn’t deserve any of that. People have made jokes about how she “friendzoned” him and all this crap and I’m just… HE’S SO CREEPY. Aside from feeling guilty about the possibility that she led him on (she didn’t), I’m sure the public ridiculed her for not reciprocating in the nonexistent relationship. I can imagine the shit she went through when the song was at its peak of popularity…
Her name is Delilah DiCrescenzo and, like this post mentions, she is an accomplished distance runner who competes on a world wide level. She competed at the 2008 US Olympic trials, and in 2017, won the women’s division of Southwest Half Marathon held in Palos Heights IL. Let’s remember and celebrate her and her accomplishments and leave Mr. Plain White Tee’s crusty ass in the dust.
