Random thoughts on Coco (#1)

Beauty stereotypes

I’m glad that Hector isn’t stereotypically handsome: He is skinny. He has a big crooked nose, big ears and a golden tooth. But that doesn’t make him ugly or less attractive. He’s so handsome and charming in his own way.

THANK YOU PIXAR

He also has slightly crooked teeth and I love it 😭

the moment miguel’s heart disappeared…

the book confirms that his body is physically disappearing (as he loses weight as the night goes on), so there must have been a moment when his heart finally stopped and ceased to exist in his transparent chest 😢

Hector’s and Coco’s skull markings

I usually find myself studying screenshots from Coco. I just noticed that Hector and Coco have the same markings on their skulls (in different colors).

I like to think that this detail represents how similar is Coco’s personality to Hector’s personality. Hector is humorous, mischievous, warm hearted, a hopeless romantic and so full of life (ironic ha-ha).

On the other hand Imelda is stubborn, fierce, passionate and more uptight than her husband (when it comes to expressing her feelings -except when she’s angry. She really knows how to express her dissatisfaction-)

Coco is stubborn like her mother (-I’ll try analysing Coco’s personality explicitly on another post) but I think that she resembles more her father.

In defense of Miguel’s abuelita (Elena)

I recently forced my friends to watch Coco with me. They really liked the movie and they cried A LOT. But there’s one thing that bothered me! They were talking shit about Elena (Miguel’s abuelita) even when the movie ended.

I decided to make this post to answer to anyone who thinks that Elena is a bad abuelita.

If you don’t like Elena as a character, then you shouldn’t like mamá Imelda either, because they literally have so much in common. [And I’m not just refering to the fact that they like to threaten people with shoes]

Elena grew up hating music for what it did to her family. Imelda definitely made sure of that. So it’s normal that she was dead set against music (as we see her at the beginning of the movie)

Imelda had for sure a lot of influence over her granddaughter. I like to think that Elena looked up to Imelda while growing up. That’s maybe the reason why their characters are so alike.

Elena loves and puts her family above everything else, just like Imelda. She basically tries to protect her from the mistakes that were made in the past. In her mind, the music ban is what saves her family from splitting up. In her mind, she does the right thing.

She thinks that it’s her duty to prevent past from repeating itself.

We shouldn’t forget her love for Miguel. She tries to guide him the “right way” and insure that he will not go the same path her forgotten grandpa did.

It’s also important to have in mind that her mamá suffers from dementia. Mamá Coco can’t even remember her own daughter. Elena is heartbroken.

Elena’s actions are directed according to what is good for her family. She’s a loving human being and a real good grandma.

God, I just love her
