Eris is one of my all time favourite animated characters. It’s been 13 years since I first saw this film and I am still utterly transfixed by the way they animated her. She is absolute heaven.
I think I (sort of) have the answer for this! ‘Cause you’re right – Ernesto is the more ‘conventionally attractive’ of the two. But Hector is hotter and more desirable, and there’re quite a few reasons for this.
First, let’s review Hector’s physical traits. He is almost the polar opposite of Ernesto regarding looks: he’s skinny, tall, and lanky, he has a big nose, big ears, and bushy eyebrows, and he has a bony face and goofy smile. Not exactly what you’d imagine when describing an attractive man. But these particular traits can be very attractive, especially in relation to animated guys. In fact, Hector has a strong physical resemblance to George from Disney’s short film Paperman, and Roger from the animated 101 Dalmatians – both of whom are characters a lot of people find attractive. (Here’s an interesting post describing the reasons Roger is attractive – a lot of it has to do with his demeanor and personality, which are important aspects to consider when interpreting a character’s attractiveness.)
Next, let’s take a look at Hector’s personality traits. From what we see of him in Coco, he is friendly, kind, genuine, charming, and funny. Most importantly though, we see that he is respectful, esp to women, and that he is good with kids and loves his family to pieces. Being a skilled musician/singer is honestly just icing on the already fantastic cake.
These aspects of Hector’s personality, combined with his more refined, softer physical features are what make him “a hot boi” to the vast majority of people.
