Somebody finally put this into words

This is the most real and relatable thing… Wow.

Tumblr, this isn’t healthy. At best it leads to confusion about boundaries; at worst it leads to abuse.

“I like being by myself and am comfortable in my own company. If you want to spend time with me, spending time with you has to feel better than being by myself. I won’t spend time with you if it makes me feel worse than being by myself.”

What is unhealthy about this? How could it ‘lead to confusion about boundaries/ abuse’? I find it very healthy, and in fact, it’s setting excellent boundaries: “If being with you makes me feel worse than not being with you, then I choose feeling better and not being with you.”

Here’s a funny thing. This isn’t the first person I’ve seen reacting negatively to a post where someone points out that there’s nothing wrong with being alone / actively choosing to be alone / not chasing relationships just because ‘you gotta’ or ‘everyone else is having one.’ I can’t find the other post right now, but it was advising people to become more comfortable with doing things by themselves, when not in a relationship (going to the restaurant, to the theater, etc). And in comes some twit, with ‘hurr durr, an asocial serial-killer wrote this.’

[inert GIF of someone flipping the bird here]

I’ve noticed that a hell of a lot of people feel actively threatened by the existence of highly introverted people, who don’t have problems with being alone and who might actually prefer that state of being. Even when all we’re doing is existing and minding our own lives, with little to no fuss.

I don’t know how to put this more clearly than the fact that there’s absolutely nothing healthy about someone going against their own nature, just because ‘society says so-and-so.’ And this can range from getting involved in a relationship one isn’t actually interested in, just because people are pressuring one for being ‘lonely’, all the way to having unwanted children, just because ‘everyone else is doing it’, instead of any genuine desire to be a parent.

I feel like this is an extension of this odd, highly entitled take on relationships a good portion of tumblr seems to have where they expect their friends/family/partners to be on-call for them 24/7 and the very idea of those people being unable to do that (because like…they have lives of their own) is considered abusive.

The idea that the people in your life are not obligated to jump when you say jump and drop everything when you say so whenever you say so rustles the hell out of a lot of people on tumblr’s jimmies. There’s this weird possessiveness that people on here show towards the people in their lives and this expectation that those people should make them their main priority above their own needs and other obligations that’s wildly unhealthy. I can easily see people who are mad at being told “I have other things going on in my life and can’t always prioritize your needs/wants over everything else” being even madder at “I expect you to bring something positive to my life/this relationship that is more fulfilling than what I can get on my own and if you can’t then I’m happy to be alone”.

THEY REALLY DO HAVE CHEST TITTIES Y’ALL I CANNOT BELIEVE

more people should talk about dan reynolds

cishetsbeingcishet:

in case you dont know who that is hes the lead singer of imagine dragons and an amazingly outspoken lgbt ally who specifically focuses on trying to help lgbt youth and i never see anyone on tumblr mention him or the work he does.

dan reynolds was raised mormon and in 2012 the first major imagine dragons single “its time” was on glee, and he started receiving letters from gay fans saying that they loved him and his music but that he probably didnt accept them because he was a mormon. he says that this broke his heart and he knew he had to do something.

not only is he really vocal about lgbt support and issues (which is more than i can say about a lot of people in the spotlight like he is) he created the loveloud foundation last year which is dedicated to supporting and helping lgbt teens and educate people about the things they go through, aiming to lower the rates of suicide, mental illness, drug use, etc.

the foundation puts on the annual loveloud festival in salt lake city, and the second one happened this past july. its an all-day music event that donates all of its profit to lgbt organizations (actually good ones, not shitty fake ones) and this year they raised ONE MILLION DOLLARS in one day.

but he and the people in charge of the festival actually GIVE A SHIT. a trans woman was harassed at the festival when she tried to use the restroom, being told she was in the wrong bathroom, and the loveloud festival not only immediately acknowledged it they ENCOURAGED other people to share any unpleasant experiences they had at the festival so they could reevaluate and figure out how to do better next year.

heres his speech from this year’s loveloud:

“…i wish you could understand… i wish you could see how much we care about you, how much we love you, how much we support you, how much we stand with you. i hope that tonight, and today, you know… you know that your sexuality is pure, and its true, and its clean. i hope that you know you are needed; we need you. i dont wanna hear any more stories of youth taking their lives in utah. we must change our culture. we must change the way we see each other. i know this culture! i know these people! i was raised in this world. i know it. i understand religion. i identify with the beautiful aspects of how i was raised. i cherish many of those things today as part of my life, but one thing that will not be part of my life, ‘cause it does not align with my heart, is to tell someone how to love, and who to love. it’s the most simple concept! its the first thing we’re taught! from a young age! all my girls [he has three daughters] know it. they come out of the womb, and they know, you love. you dont tell someone how to love; you just love. let… love and let love, thats it.

i accept you, i see you, i stand with you, i fight with you. til the end, i will fight with you. i love you all.”

i think allies could learn from him and the way he talks about being gay. its not just okay, its pure. its true. its clean. its perfect. specifically addressing the way gay love and sexuality is demonized and slandered.

idk. i just love dan reynolds and i think more people need to know about what he does.

Why did we used to think hadrosaurs and sauropods were aquatic?

palaeofail-explained:

Okay, there’s multiple ways to answer this.

1. The first sauropods discovered were misinterpreted as giant sea creatures, just due to their immense size. People didn’t have a reference point of something that big living on land, but they did know of things that big in the water.

2. “Mummified” hadrosaurs were found, which showed soft tissue connecting the fingers. This was interpreted as a flipper (though in fact, it was a mitten-shaped hoof type structure)

3. On a more meta level – naturalists of the time viewed dinosaurs as primitive. The thought process was that since Man™ (specifically, Christian White Man™) is the Highest Of All Creatures™, that others logically must be lower. Reptiles specifically were “lower”, and creatures of the past were EXTRA “lower” because clearly evolution means that everything gets better over time (This, of course, is not how evolution works. Evolution is just selecting for characteristics that improve chances of making copies of DNA). These combined to form a picture of dinosaurs as sluggish, cold-blooded creatures that could not support their own weight and were relegated to (presumably disease-infested) swamps with the other Lower Creatures.

In order to justify this, any feature of dinosaurs was interpreted as evidence of aquatic life. Sauropod nostrils were for snorkels. Hadrosaur crests were for holding air. Long tails were for swimming like crocodiles, and evidence be damned if it showed that they couldn’t scull their tails or that the amount of air that could be stored in a hadrosaur crest was negligible. This line of thinking is also what led to the tail-dragging, cold-blooded, stupid dinosaurs of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Fascinatingly, this was not the original interpretation. Fresh off the publication of On The Origin of Species and the discovery of Archaeopteryx, researchers like Cope and Marsh were resurrecting active, terrestrial dinosaurs – even sauropods, after they realised they were not giant mosasaur-like things. Indeed, the dinosaurian ancestry of birds was recognised in the 1860s!

Later, however, this actual science became warped by the views of so-called “progress” noted above, and scientists formerly in favour of active, terrestrial dinosaurs recanted and relegated them to the primitive swamps. This is maybe best illustrated by the palaeoart of the time:

You’re likely familiar with one or both of these pieces. What you might not, realise, however, is that they are by the same artist – Charles R. Knight – and that the former, active one was painted decades before the latter, tail-dragging one. You read that right – after forty years, the artist was painting dinosaurs as much less active and accurate than he was before. This wasn’t just him, either – it was a reflection of larger trends in palaeontology and (you could argue), society.

REBLOG TO SAVE YOUR QUEER HEART FROM BREAKING

I’ve seen a bunch of people in the notes concerned (like I was) of comparisons of members of the lgbt to dogs: but upon visiting their website I was reassured that they monitor a variety of content, including (but not limited to):

THIS IS A GOOD SITE

Yeah, this site is literally so people can check for content they don’t want to see…or in some cases content that would make them physically or mentally ill. (I have strobe issues myself…)

It’s highly useful for a lot of people.

I had no idea they warned for strobe effects, that’s awesome! They give me headaches and nausea.

Link for those unfamiliar: https://www.doesthedogdie.com/

They frequently add more categories, it seems – there have been more added just about every time I’ve visited the site. And they’re clearly open to suggestions, as the twitter exchange in the OP shows 😀
